Target Audience: 9th Grade World History students
Instructional Design Process Used:
The instructional design process utilized for this project was the ADDIE model. This includes several phases (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation).
Lesson Taught: Ancient Greece Unit Review
SSWH3 The student will examine the political, philosophical, and cultural interaction of Classical Mediterranean societies from 700 BCE to 400 CE.
The students will create a comic strip that summarizes the main ideas and concepts from this unit. The comic strip must contain at least six slides and include information about the geography, city-states, and the differences between Athens and Sparta.
How can this be used for instructional purposes? A comic strip is an excellent summarizing activity for a high school social studies class.
The principles and elements of visual/media literacy and/or Mayer’s multimedia principles that you employed for the assignment:
Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning suggests that students better when both words and visual aids are utilized together. This theory is used when completing an assignment that incorporates the creation of comic strips, cartoons, or graphic novels.
Own Definition of comics, cartoons, and graphic novels:
Comics are a visual format that utilizes frames to convey stories using pictures and words.
Cartoons are a two-dimensional visual motion pictures used in a sequence of illustrations to convey a story.
Graphic Novels are lengthy comics that are bound in either a hard or soft cover.
Reflections about challenges completing this assignment:
This was the first time I ever created a comic strip. I wanted to think of a creative way I could incorporate this into my world history class. At the end of each unit, the students are expected to complete a unit project. For the Ancient Greece unit, I thought the students could summarize what they learned in a comic strip. Overall, this was much easier than I first thought. The most difficult part of this assignment was finding scenes and accessories for the specific part of time for Ancient Greece.
